A Nigerian security expert and analyst, Dr. Yahuza Getso, has voiced strong support for recent U.S. military intervention in Northern Nigeria, arguing that the involvement of American forces will send a decisive message to armed terrorists that they must surrender or be crushed. Dr. Getso made his comments in Kano State, saying the U.S. action serves not only as pressure on violent militants but also as a wake-up call for Nigerian authorities to fulfil their constitutional responsibility of safeguarding lives and property across the country.
“Weak responses and inaction have emboldened criminals, and those responsible need to understand that if the Nigerian government cannot handle them effectively, international forces will step in,” Getso said, highlighting that the intervention could prompt terrorists to reconsider continuing their violent campaigns. While he welcomed the strikes, he expressed concern about the religious framing of the conflict, noting that violence in Nigeria’s complex security landscape often has multiple causes beyond religion.
Getso’s remarks come amid heightened cooperation between Nigeria and the United States following precision airstrikes against Islamic State-linked militants in northwest Nigeria, operations confirmed by both governments as part of structured security collaboration to counter terrorism and violent extremism. Nigerian officials emphasise that all counter-terrorism actions aim to protect civilians and uphold national unity, regardless of faith or ethnicity.
Analysts and civil society groups in Nigeria remain divided over foreign military involvement, with some advocating increased international support to address long-standing insecurity while others warn that external intervention could undermine national sovereignty and complicate the fragile security environment.
