Kaduna-based cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has defended his regular engagements with armed terrorist groups, saying he never visits their camps alone but is always accompanied by police and government representatives.
Speaking at the 2025 Southwest Muslims Ulama Summit in Ibadan, Gumi said his interventions aim to “understand the roots of insecurity” and open pathways for education and rehabilitation for the militants. He blamed neglect and lack of opportunity particularly poor education and high unemployment as the “two evils” driving many herders to violence.
Gumi also pushed back against media portrayals of his work, accusing critics of misrepresenting his intentions. He argued that his mission is not to glorify or shield criminals, but to build bridges, calling for a more humane, long-term solution to Nigeria’s security crisis.
