Outrage as Nigerian Army Personnel Open Fire on Operation Zenda Commander in Benue

Naka, Benue State – November 12, 2025:

A serious inter-agency clash erupted when soldiers of the Nigerian Army allegedly opened fire on the patrol team of CSP Lyam Akegh, the commander of Operation Zenda, in Gwer West Local Government Area, according to a report by Sahara Reporters

CSP Akegh and his team were on official duty conducting a routine patrol in Naka, a community that has recently seen a rise in criminal activity. Eyewitnesses say that after completing their operations, the police convoy was ambushed by army personnel, who opened sporadic gunfire on their vehicle.

In a public statement, authorities called the incident “highly condemnable” and demanded an immediate and thorough investigation by Army leadership to determine how and why the shooting happened. Critics argue that such inter-agency hostility, especially among security services that are supposed to coordinate, threatens joint operations and undermines efforts to stabilize Benue State.

A witness expressed deep concern for CSP Akegh’s safety, commending his dedication in fighting crime in the region: “His unwavering efforts have ensured that citizens of Benue State sleep with their two eyes closed.

The attack has sparked outrage among security watchers, who say it is emblematic of the indiscipline and lack of coordination that plague Nigeria’s security architecture.
