AWKA, Anambra State — The Anambra State Police Command announced on Saturday that it has recovered the decomposing bodies of two women believed to be among a group of three Cameroonian nationals abducted earlier this month. The remains were found in the Omambala River in Anambra West Local Government Area, following a coordinated search by police, professional divers and local volunteers.
In a statement, Police Spokesperson SP Ikenga Tochukwu said the search was conducted on the evening of November 28 by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu. The two bodies were positively identified by relatives as those of Mrs. Bognou Alice and her niece Miss Sandra both among the women reported missing. The corpses have been deposited at a mortuary pending forensic examination and further investigation.
Two suspects Nonso Augustine Akpeh (37) and Kingsley Akpeh (44) are currently in police custody and cooperating with investigators. Authorities say a third suspect, Uchenna Nicholas Mmadu, remains at large, and an intensified manhunt is underway to rescue the final missing woman and apprehend all responsible.
The development has sparked mourning in the community and drawn sharp condemnation from residents and human-rights advocates, who said the incident underscores deepening insecurity in the state — particularly against foreign nationals and vulnerable populations. Local leaders have called for urgent action from both state and federal authorities to curb kidnapping, ensure justice for the victims, and restore confidence in personal safety.
Dalena Reporters will continue to monitor the investigation, report on the outcome of forensic examinations, and track efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspect and recover the final victim.
