In Nigeria: Plateau Government Orders Immediate Closure of Basic Schools Amid Rising Insecurity

Jos — The Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB) has ordered the immediate shutdown of all basic schools in the state, citing grave security concerns and a need to protect pupils from potential threats.

According to PSUBEB’s public relations officer, Richard Jonah, all Government Junior Model Secondary Schools (GJMSSs) will close effective Saturday, November 22, 2025, while primary and day schools are to shut starting Monday, November 24, 2025

Jonah emphasized that the measure is temporary but necessary, describing it as a proactive step taken in response to intelligence assessments of heightened risk. He stressed that the safety and well-being of students are top priorities and called on local education authorities, school administrators, and community leaders to cooperate fully.

The closure order is not isolated to Plateau. Katsina State also announced school closures for similar security reasons, citing rising banditry and threats to educational institutions.

Officials say they are working with security agencies to reassess risks and determine when it will be safe for students to return to class.
