Historic Moment as Ireland Elects First Woman President

In the Irish presidential election, Catherine Connolly, running as an independent, won 63.4% of the vote. Former Prime Minister Heather Humphreys came in second with 29.5%.

According to Reuters, 13% of Irish voters spoiled their ballots. Conservative politicians who failed to advance to the main stage of the presidential race had previously called for such a protest.

After the election results were announced, Catherine Connolly delivered a speech. "I will be a president who listens, reflects, and speaks when necessary. I will be a voice for peace, a voice that is grounded in our policy of neutrality," she said (quoted by RTE).

Catherine Connolly is considered a far-left politician. In 2016, she was first elected to the Irish Parliament. She has criticized  EU plans to increase military spending.
