Anambra November Election: Will Soludo Defy The Odds Or Is APC Ready To Shock The State? By Daniel Okonkwo

Anambra State has long been regarded as one of Nigeria’s most unique political and economic landscapes. Home to some of the wealthiest individuals in Africa, the state is blessed with enormous human and financial capital, yet has often struggled with leadership that translates its wealth into sustainable development.

When Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo assumed office under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), his emergence brought a flicker of hope. His reputation as a globally recognized economist raised expectations that Anambra would finally witness transformative governance. However, nearly four years into his administration, public opinion remains divided.

While Soludo insists his government has achieved “significant progress in infrastructure and human capital development without borrowing money,” critics argue that the pace of visible development remains slow. His projects, including the New Anambra State Government House, the New Governor’s Lodge, and the Solution Fun City, were recently inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his first official visit to the state since assuming office in May 2023.

President Tinubu, visibly impressed, praised Soludo as “a good thinker and solution provider” who is “placing Anambra on the path of 21st-century development.” The President added that his administration is ready to work with all states that prioritize human, social, and economic progress.

This high-profile endorsement raises questions ahead of the November 8 governorship election. Can Soludo’s alliance with the Federal Government strengthen his re-election chances? Or will the opposition, particularly the All Progressives Congress (APC), capitalize on Anambra’s hunger for deeper reforms?

Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, the APC candidate, has styled himself as “a child of circumstances” entering the race at a time when, in his words, “the people are yearning for good leadership.” The contest, therefore, is shaping up to be a battle between continuity and change.

But beyond political promises lies a crucial question: Does Ikechukwu have enough experience to govern Anambra State? Leadership here is not a real estate investment or government contract; it demands an extraordinary depth of governance experience. The professor-turned-governor should recognize that Ndi Anambra are not looking for self-acclaimed victories but tangible, measurable achievements that truly impact lives.

Beyond politics, Anambra still grapples with insecurity. For years, kidnappings and attacks by “unknown gunmen” discouraged diaspora indigenes from returning home. While authorities, including the state Commissioner of Police, now insist the state is safe, citing Tinubu’s hitch-free visit, skepticism lingers among citizens.

The stakes could not be higher. Will Anambra voters overlook political sentiment and rally behind the most credible candidate? Or will party loyalty dictate the outcome, as APC pushes to expand its foothold in the South-East?

For Soludo, the November polls may well be the ultimate test of his legacy. For APC, it could be a breakthrough moment. For Anambra, it is yet another chance to align its immense wealth with visionary leadership capable of driving the state to greater heights.
