Captain Kamal, a senior officer in the Nigerian Army, was killed during a Boko Haram attack in the Izge community of Gwoza Local Government Area, Borno State. The assault occurred around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, when terrorists infiltrated the farming community, firing sporadically. Nigerian military personnel, aided by local hunters, vigilantes, and members of the civilian Joint Task Force, repelled the attackers. In the confrontation, three terrorists were killed, and several motorcycles, bicycles, an operational vehicle, and a sophisticated rifle were recovered. Unfortunately, alongside Captain Kamal, another soldier lost his life in the process.
The Emir of Gwoza, Mohammed Shehu Timta, recounted the incident, highlighting the bravery of the security forces and local collaborators. This attack underscores the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria's northeastern region.
According to a report by SBM Intelligence, at least 2,000 people were killed in Nigeria between January and March 2025, with Borno State recording the highest number of deaths at 515. The report also noted that 136 security personnel were killed during the same period.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has expressed concern over the rising insecurity, emphasizing the need for both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches in combating insurgency. He noted that over the past three years, more than 300,000 repentant Boko Haram fighters have been received, many of whom are farmers.
