The military said security forces killed 12 militants during the overnight attack, which began when the assailants attempted to storm the check post before detonating an explosives-laden vehicle that severely damaged the facility.
The attack comes amid a renewed surge in militant violence in Pakistan’s western provinces bordering Afghanistan, where security forces have faced increasingly sophisticated attacks by the Pakistani Taliban in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and separatist insurgents, including the Baloch Liberation Army, in neighboring Balochistan.
Pakistan says militants operate from sanctuaries across the border in Afghanistan and has repeatedly accused India of backing them, allegations both Kabul and New Delhi deny.
“The assailants sought to breach the check post security,” the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations, said in a statement. “Displaying unwavering courage and professional excellence, troops engaged the fleeing khwarij [militants] with precision, eliminating twelve khwarij.”
“In their desperation, the attackers rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the perimeter wall,” the statement added. “Due to blast impact, infrastructure at the check post was seriously damaged, resultantly fifteen brave sons of soil including twelve military personnel, two policemen and a government official from the forest department rendered the ultimate sacrifice and embraced Shahadat [martyrdom].”
The military said a “sanitization operation” was underway to eliminate any remaining militants in the area and vowed to continue its counterterrorism operations.
Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in militant attacks in recent years, which have been concentrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where the Pakistani Taliban and Baloch separatist groups have stepped up assaults on security forces, police, government installations and Chinese interests.
