BOLOGNA, Italy — The death of a 42-year-old Moroccan-born entrepreneur, Abderrahim Fakir, during a police arrest in the northern Italian city of Bologna has sparked widespread protests and renewed debate over police conduct, with demonstrators clashing with riot officers as authorities launched an official investigation into the incident.
According to Italian authorities, police were called on Sunday after receiving reports that Fakir was behaving aggressively and had allegedly damaged a parked vehicle. Officers responding to the scene attempted to restrain him, during which he was held face-down on the ground. Video footage recorded by a nearby resident and widely circulated on social media appeared to show Fakir repeatedly saying he could not breathe and calling for help before he became unresponsive.
Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and attempted to revive him, but Fakir was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet confirmed the official cause of death, and prosecutors have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police said body-camera footage from the officers involved will be made available to investigators.
The incident prompted hundreds of people to take to the streets in Bologna, where protesters marched through the city demanding justice and accountability. Opposition politicians called for a transparent and independent investigation, arguing that the public deserves a full account of the events leading to Fakir's death. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi expressed confidence in the judicial process, stating that prosecutors would conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. He urged the public to avoid speculation while authorities examine all available evidence, including witness statements and video recordings.
Fakir's family has strongly disputed the circumstances surrounding his death. His sister, Khadija Fakir, accused police of using excessive force and called for justice, saying her brother "was killed in cold blood." The family has demanded a full investigation into the actions of everyone involved in the arrest.
Human rights organizations and civil society groups have also called for transparency, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public confidence in law enforcement through independent investigations whenever deaths occur in police custody or during arrests. They urged authorities to ensure that any findings are made public and that accountability is upheld if wrongdoing is established.
The case has reignited broader discussions in Italy about policing practices, the use of force during arrests, and the treatment of vulnerable individuals experiencing apparent mental health crises.
