WASHINGTON — Growing anxiety is emerging within Republican circles as party strategists and donors increasingly question whether U.S. President Donald Trump will commit part of his enormous political fundraising reserve to defend what was once considered a safe Republican Senate seat in Texas.
At the center of the debate is the increasingly competitive Texas Senate race following the Republican primary victory of Ken Paxton, who secured momentum after receiving Trump’s endorsement and defeating longtime Senator John Cornyn. Republicans now face a general election environment that appears far less comfortable than expected.
According to Reuters reporting, Trump’s political operation and affiliated organizations currently control approximately $356 million in campaign resources, creating expectations among Republican leaders that financial support could be directed toward preserving Senate control in Texas. Yet, despite growing calls from within the party, no public commitment has been announced regarding major spending in the state.
The concern stems from the emergence of Democratic challenger James Talarico as a stronger-than-anticipated opponent. Reuters reported that Talarico has built a significant fundraising operation, collecting roughly $40 million and maintaining nearly $10 million available for the campaign effort.
Texas has long been viewed as a Republican stronghold in Senate contests, but recent polling and campaign dynamics have caused strategists to reassess assumptions about the state’s political landscape. Republicans currently hold a narrow Senate majority, raising the stakes for races that previously required limited national investment.
Political observers suggest that if national Republican resources are redirected into Texas, fewer funds may remain available for traditionally competitive battleground states. Some party insiders have reportedly looked toward Texas Governor Greg Abbott, whose campaign network maintains substantial financial resources, as another possible source of support.
The outcome could become an early test of Trump’s political strategy ahead of the broader 2026 midterm cycle. With campaign spending across congressional races projected to reach record levels, decisions about where and when national figures invest resources may play an increasingly decisive role in determining control of Congress.
