Fresh outrage has followed another deadly attack in Nigeria’s northwest after Amnesty International condemned authorities over the killing of at least 17 farmers and injuries sustained by multiple others during a violent assault in Zamfara State.

According to reports, the attack occurred in Goron Namaye village in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where armed assailants believed to be bandits targeted farmers working in their fields. Local officials and residents said the attackers arrived disguised as visitors before opening fire, leaving at least 17 people dead and several others wounded.

Amnesty International condemned the killings and criticised what it described as continued failures to protect communities vulnerable to recurring attacks. The rights group urged Nigerian authorities to strengthen civilian protection measures and ensure accountability for perpetrators responsible for violence against farming communities.

Community leaders described the incident as another devastating blow to local agricultural activity at a time when farmers should be fully engaged in seasonal planting. Residents warned that repeated attacks have forced many rural families to abandon their farms out of fear, raising concerns about livelihoods and food production.

One local official reportedly characterised the repeated assaults as deliberate attempts to disrupt agricultural operations across affected communities. Residents also appealed for stronger security deployment and sustained protection measures to allow farming activities to continue safely.

The attack comes amid wider concerns about insecurity across northern Nigeria, where armed groups have continued to carry out kidnappings, raids, and attacks on civilians. Human rights organisations have repeatedly called for more effective security responses and improved protection for vulnerable communities.

As of publication, authorities had not released additional details regarding arrests or immediate operational outcomes connected to the incident. Community members continue to call for urgent intervention and long-term security measures to prevent further violence.
