NEW ORLEANS — Grammy-nominated rapper Mystikal has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in a Louisiana rape case connected to a 2022 incident at his home in Prairieville. The sentencing closes a years-long legal case involving one of hip-hop’s most recognizable Southern artists from the early 2000s.
Mystikal, whose legal name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, entered a guilty plea in March 2026 to third-degree rape. The plea agreement reduced the original first-degree rape charge and placed a maximum sentence cap of 20 years. Prosecutors had initially pursued more serious charges that carried the possibility of a mandatory life sentence if convicted.
Days before sentencing, court filings showed that the rapper attempted to withdraw his guilty plea, arguing he had not fully considered the consequences before agreeing to the deal. The request was ultimately rejected and sentencing moved forward as scheduled.
During the hearing, the victim addressed the court and requested the maximum sentence available under the plea agreement. Court reports indicated she described the assault and the impact it had on her life. During the proceedings, Mystikal reportedly stated that if the allegations were true, he deserved the maximum sentence.
Mystikal had remained in custody without bond since his arrest in 2022 at the Ascension Parish Jail while awaiting resolution of the case.
Once a major figure in Southern hip-hop, Mystikal rose to prominence during the late 1990s and early 2000s through work associated with No Limit Records and became widely known for songs including Shake Ya Ass. He also earned Grammy recognition during the peak of his commercial success.
The sentencing marks another major legal chapter in the artist’s public life and effectively ends the current criminal proceedings tied to the 2022 case.
