ILESHA BARUBA, KWARA STATE, NIGERIA — A wave of deadly reprisal violence swept through Ilesha Baruba in Kwara State’s Baruten Local Government Area after the killing of a respected Islamic cleric triggered mob attacks that left at least two men dead and more than ten Fulani-owned buildings destroyed.

Authorities confirmed that the unrest erupted following a violent confrontation involving prominent Islamic scholar Alhaji Mohammed Ilyasu, popularly known as Alfa Ilyasu, and an unidentified Fulani man. According to police investigations, both men sustained severe machete wounds during the incident and were rushed to a medical facility for treatment. However, the cleric was declared dead upon arrival, while the suspected attacker later died from injuries sustained during the clash.

The deaths ignited widespread anger across the community, where residents reportedly viewed the cleric as a highly respected religious figure. Witnesses and local reports indicated that enraged youths stormed the hospital where the suspect’s body was being kept, seized the corpse, and set it ablaze. The violence quickly escalated as mobs launched attacks on Fulani settlements, burning homes and other structures believed to be linked to members of the ethnic group. Police said at least ten buildings were razed during the unrest.

Community leaders described the atmosphere in the area as tense, with security operatives deployed to prevent further breakdown of law and order. Reports suggest that another individual was also killed and burned during the retaliatory attacks, further deepening fears of ethnic and communal reprisals.

In a statement, the Kwara State Police Command condemned the mob actions, describing them as barbaric, criminal, and contrary to the rule of law. Police spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi said authorities had launched a full-scale investigation into both the killing of the cleric and the subsequent acts of arson and mob violence.

Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing that grievances must be addressed through lawful channels rather than retaliatory violence. He vowed that all individuals involved in the killings, destruction of property, and other criminal acts would be identified and prosecuted.

The killing of Alfa Ilyasu had already generated widespread outrage across Baruten and neighboring communities. Local leaders said the cleric was attacked during a period of religious instruction and later succumbed to his injuries despite efforts to save his life. Traditional rulers and political leaders have since appealed for calm while investigations continue.

Growing Security Concerns

The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of Kwara State, where communities have increasingly faced violence linked to criminal gangs, banditry, and communal tensions. Earlier in 2026, parts of the state experienced devastating attacks that claimed numerous lives and displaced residents, raising concerns about the vulnerability of rural communities to violence.

Analysis

The violence in Ilesha Baruba highlights the fragile relationship between justice, communal identity, and public trust in security institutions. While the killing of a respected religious leader understandably provoked outrage, the subsequent mob attacks demonstrate how quickly grief and anger can transform into collective violence.

Analysts warn that retaliatory attacks targeting ethnic communities risk fueling cycles of revenge that can persist long after the original incident. The destruction of Fulani-owned properties may also deepen existing tensions between farming and pastoralist communities in parts of northern and central Nigeria, where disputes over security and identity have frequently escalated into broader conflicts.

The challenge for authorities will be twofold: ensuring a transparent investigation into the cleric’s death while also holding accountable those responsible for the mob violence. Failure to address either aspect could undermine public confidence and create conditions for further unrest.

For now, security agencies remain on high alert as community leaders, religious figures, and government officials work to prevent the tragedy from spiraling into a wider communal crisis.
