ILESHA BARUBA, KWARA STATE, NIGERIA — A wave of deadly reprisal violence swept through Ilesha Baruba in Kwara State’s Baruten Local Government Area after the killing of a respected Islamic cleric triggered mob attacks that left at least two men dead and more than ten Fulani-owned buildings destroyed.
Authorities confirmed that the unrest erupted following a violent confrontation involving prominent Islamic scholar Alhaji Mohammed Ilyasu, popularly known as Alfa Ilyasu, and an unidentified Fulani man. According to police investigations, both men sustained severe machete wounds during the incident and were rushed to a medical facility for treatment. However, the cleric was declared dead upon arrival, while the suspected attacker later died from injuries sustained during the clash.
