ALBANY, WESTERN AUSTRALIA — A 35-year-old diver has died after being attacked by a suspected large shark while spearfishing with family members off the coast near Albany in Western Australia, authorities confirmed on Saturday.
Emergency services were called shortly after 11:25 a.m. local time following reports of a serious marine incident near Michaelmas Island. According to Western Australia Police, the man was brought back to shore by boat and transferred to waiting paramedics at Albany Waterfront Marina, where emergency crews attempted lifesaving treatment but were unable to revive him.
Officials said the victim had been participating in a family spearfishing outing when the attack occurred. Authorities believe the incident involved a shark estimated to be approximately 4.5 metres in length. Police indicated a report will be prepared for the coroner as part of the formal investigation process.
Western Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development advised people in the area to exercise additional caution and remain attentive to official safety notices and any local beach advisories while authorities continue monitoring conditions near the island.
The incident adds to heightened public attention surrounding recent fatal shark encounters in Australia. Reports indicate this is among several fatal shark attacks recorded nationally in recent weeks, prompting renewed discussion around coastal safety and marine awareness measures.
Local residents expressed shock following the tragedy, noting that fatal incidents of this nature remain uncommon in the Albany region despite the area’s popularity for fishing and ocean recreation. Authorities have extended condolences to the victim’s family as investigations continue.
