UAE Accuses Iran of Targeting Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz Amid Escalating Tensions

The United Arab Emirates has accused Iran of targeting a national oil tanker in the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing regional crisis.

According to emerging reports, the vessel—linked to Abu Dhabi’s national oil operations was struck by projectiles, believed to be part of a broader pattern of attacks involving drones and missiles in the Gulf. Officials in the UAE strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a dangerous provocation that threatens both regional stability and global energy security.

Authorities said the tanker sustained damage but no casualties were reported among the crew. The incident occurred near the UAE port of Fujairah, a key hub for oil exports, where several maritime security alerts have been issued in recent days following repeated threats to commercial shipping.

The accusation comes amid a sharp escalation in hostilities linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and U.S.-aligned forces. Recent developments have seen increased attacks on vessels and infrastructure in the Gulf, including missile and drone strikes targeting ships and oil facilities in and around UAE waters.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, handling a substantial share of global oil shipments. Disruptions in the narrow waterway have already caused shipping delays, rising insurance costs, and increased volatility in global energy markets.

In response to the incident, the UAE has called on the international community to take urgent action to ensure the safety of maritime routes and prevent further escalation. Officials also urged Iran to halt what they described as hostile activities and return to diplomatic engagement.

Iran, however, has previously denied targeting civilian vessels and has maintained that its actions are defensive, linked to broader military tensions in the region. The conflicting narratives have added to uncertainty, with both sides trading accusations as the situation continues to deteriorate.

Analysts warn that continued attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz could have far-reaching consequences, not only for the Middle East but for global trade and energy supply chains. With tensions already high, the latest incident underscores the fragile security environment and the growing risk of wider confrontation.
