TORONTO — Three serving members of the Toronto Police Service have been arrested in Barcelona, Spain, after authorities alleged that a woman was physically and sexually assaulted while the officers were vacationing in the city.

According to reports from Spanish and Canadian media, the incident occurred in the early hours of May 13 in Barcelona’s Barceloneta district. Investigators allege the woman, described as a sex worker in court documents, had initially agreed to provide services to one of the men before the situation escalated inside a taxi.

Spanish newspaper El País reported that the woman alleged the three men attempted to force her into a group sexual act and assaulted her after she refused. Local police officers reportedly intervened after hearing screams coming from the taxi. Two suspects were arrested at the scene, while a third was later detained in Palma de Mallorca.

Global News reported that the three accused are Toronto police officers who were in Spain on vacation and were not traveling in any official policing capacity. One of the officers reportedly remains in custody facing allegations linked to sexual assault without penetration, while another is under investigation for allegedly resisting police during the arrest.

The woman sustained facial injuries during the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment, according to Spanish authorities. Investigators in Barcelona have continued gathering evidence as judicial proceedings move forward under Spain’s legal system.

The Toronto Police Service acknowledged awareness of the arrests but declined to comment extensively because the investigation is being handled by Spanish authorities. The force said it is monitoring developments closely.

The arrests come at a difficult time for the Toronto Police Service, which has already faced intense public scrutiny in recent months following several high-profile criminal investigations involving officers. Earlier this year, multiple current and former Toronto police officers were arrested as part of “Project South,” a major corruption and organized crime probe led by York Regional Police.

Community advocates and legal observers say the latest allegations could further damage public confidence in the police service, particularly as questions surrounding accountability and officer conduct continue to dominate public debate in Canada’s largest city.
