Fresh violence erupted in Nigeria’s northwestern Zamfara State after armed bandits stormed a rural community, killing one resident and injuring several others before security forces engaged the attackers in a gun battle.

According to reports from local residents and security sources, the attack occurred in Maradun Local Government Area late Thursday night when heavily armed gunmen invaded the community and opened fire on residents. The victim killed during the assault was identified as Shehu Moda, while at least three other residents sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Residents said panic spread across the area as the attackers moved through parts of the community firing sporadically, forcing families to flee into surrounding bushes for safety. Witnesses reported hearing sustained gunfire for several minutes before police tactical teams and local security operatives responded to the scene.

The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed that officers engaged the bandits during the attack, leading to an exchange of gunfire that reportedly forced the assailants to retreat from the area. Authorities said security operations were ongoing as police and vigilante groups continued pursuing the attackers through nearby forests believed to serve as hideouts for armed gangs operating across the region.

The latest assault adds to growing insecurity across Zamfara and several other northwestern Nigerian states, where armed bandit groups have continued carrying out deadly raids, kidnappings and attacks on villages despite ongoing military operations. Communities in Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and parts of Niger State have experienced repeated violence linked to heavily armed criminal gangs commonly referred to locally as bandits.

Security experts say many of the armed groups operate from vast forest regions that stretch across multiple states, making coordinated military operations difficult. Some of the gangs have also reportedly developed links with extremist networks operating in northern Nigeria, worsening concerns over regional instability.

The attack in Zamfara came only days after Amnesty International accused the Nigerian military of carrying out an airstrike on a crowded market in the state that reportedly killed dozens of civilians. Human rights organizations have increasingly warned that civilians are now trapped between violent criminal gangs and aggressive military operations.

Local residents have repeatedly called on the federal government to strengthen security deployments in rural communities where attacks frequently occur with little warning. Community leaders in Zamfara say many villages remain vulnerable due to poor road access, limited police presence and delayed emergency responses during attacks.

Nigeria’s northwest region has faced years of escalating violence involving mass kidnappings, attacks on highways, cattle rustling and village raids. Although security agencies have announced several offensives against bandit groups in recent months, attacks continue to occur across remote communities, raising fresh concerns over the effectiveness of existing security measures.
