The Nigerian Army has confirmed that its troops engaged in a gun battle with suspected fighters of the Eastern Security Network in Enugu State, leaving many soldiers injured during the confrontation. The clash is the latest in a series of military operations targeting separating groups operating in southeastern Nigeria.

According to military authorities, the incident occurred during a security operation in a community within Enugu State where troops were reportedly pursuing suspected armed separatist fighters believed to be operating in the area. The Army stated that its forces encountered resistance and exchanged gunfire with the suspected ESN members.

In a statement cited by Sahara Reporters, military officials said three soldiers sustained injuries during the clash and were subsequently evacuated for medical treatment. The Army added that security operations in the area had been intensified following the confrontation.

The military claimed the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to dismantle armed camps and criminal networks linked to separatist violence in the Southeast. Authorities accused ESN fighters of involvement in attacks on security personnel, government facilities, and civilians across the region.

The Eastern Security Network was established by the Indigenous People of Biafra, a separatist group advocating for the independence of Biafra from Nigeria. Nigerian authorities have designated IPOB as a terrorist organization, although the group has repeatedly denied involvement in several violent incidents attributed to it.

Communities across southeastern Nigeria have experienced recurring violence involving Nigerian security agencies, suspected separatist fighters, and armed criminal groups over recent years. The insecurity has led to frequent military raids, arrests, and clashes in states including Enugu, Imo, Anambra, and Abia.

Residents in some communities have previously accused security forces of carrying out heavy-handed operations that allegedly resulted in destruction of property and civilian displacement. Human rights organizations have repeatedly called for accountability and restraint during military operations in the region.

The Nigerian Army, however, insists that its operations are necessary to combat armed violence and restore security in affected communities. Military authorities say separatist-linked groups have increasingly used forests and rural areas as operational bases for attacks and kidnappings.

Security analysts warn that continued clashes between security forces and armed groups could further destabilize the Southeast if underlying political tensions and grievances remain unresolved. Calls for dialogue alongside security operations have continued from religious leaders, civil society groups, and regional stakeholders.

The latest incident comes amid broader security challenges across Nigeria, including banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, and communal violence affecting multiple regions of the country. Authorities have pledged continued military operations against armed groups nationwide.
