KYIV — A Ukrainian drone has struck a residential apartment building in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, marking the first such attack on the city since the outbreak of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, regional authorities confirmed on Saturday.

The governor of the Sverdlovsk region, Denis Pasler, reported that the drone hit a multi-story building in the city, causing damage but no fatalities. Several residents sustained minor injuries, while one woman required hospitalization following the incident. Emergency services were swiftly deployed to the scene, and affected residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Images and video footage circulating on social media, later verified by Reuters, showed smoke billowing from the upper floors of the high-rise structure. The building’s exterior appeared significantly damaged, with parts of the facade blackened and several windows shattered by the impact.

Authorities have yet to confirm the exact origin or type of drone used in the strike, and there has been no immediate official response from Ukrainian officials regarding the incident.

The attack comes amid escalating hostilities between the two countries, following a major overnight Russian assault on Ukraine that reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least seven people. The latest developments highlight the widening scope of the conflict, with strikes increasingly reaching deeper into Russian territory.

Security analysts note that the incident could signal a shift in the dynamics of the war, as urban centers previously considered distant from the frontlines become vulnerable to aerial attacks. The strike on Yekaterinburg, Russia’s fourth-largest city, underscores the growing reach of drone warfare in modern conflicts and raises concerns about civilian safety on both sides.

As tensions continue to rise, authorities in the affected region have urged residents to remain vigilant while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
