A 27-year-old Texas nurse is fighting for her life after a sudden and severe illness struck just days into what was meant to be a joyful honeymoon in Japan, prompting an emergency medical evacuation back to the United States.
According to reports, Sarah Danh, a labor and delivery nurse based in San Antonio, became critically ill only two days after arriving in Tokyo with her husband, Luke Gradl, following their wedding in March. What began as mild discomfort quickly escalated into a life-threatening condition, forcing her to seek urgent medical attention.
Doctors in Japan diagnosed Danh with acute liver failure, a serious condition that rapidly worsened. She later developed additional complications, including kidney failure and increased pressure in the brain, placing her in critical condition in an intensive care unit.
As her condition deteriorated, medical teams worked urgently to stabilize her for transport. She was eventually airlifted back to the United States on a specialized 20-hour medical flight equipped with advanced life-support systems. The journey included multiple refueling stops and required careful monitoring throughout.
Upon arrival in San Antonio, Danh was transferred to a medical facility where a transplant team is now on standby, as she is expected to require a liver transplant to survive.
The couple’s honeymoon, which was originally planned as a 16-day celebration, was abruptly cut short by the medical emergency. Her husband, who has remained by her side throughout the ordeal, described the experience as overwhelming and emotionally exhausting.
The situation has also drawn widespread public attention and support. A fundraising campaign launched by family and friends has raised significant funds to help cover mounting medical expenses and the cost of the emergency evacuation.
Medical experts say acute liver failure can occur suddenly and progress rapidly, often requiring immediate intervention such as transplantation. However, the exact cause of Danh’s illness has not yet been confirmed.
