South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has dismissed the country’s parliament speaker and deputy speaker in a sweeping leadership shake-up that has intensified political tensions in the East African nation.

According to an official decree read in parliament, Speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba and her deputy, Permena Awerial Aluong, were removed from their positions in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly. The announcement was made by Tulio Odongi Ayahu, chief whip of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

The move follows a petition submitted last week by members of the ruling party’s caucus, accusing Kumba of corruption related to the alleged mismanagement of parliamentary funds. The petition called for her immediate removal, triggering swift action from the presidency.

Kumba, who made history in 2021 as South Sudan’s first female parliament speaker, has not publicly responded to the allegations or her dismissal.

Following the removals, President Kiir appointed Joseph Ngere Paciko as the new speaker, with Abuk Paiti Ayiik named as deputy speaker, signaling a rapid restructuring of the legislative leadership.

The latest development comes just weeks after Kiir dismissed Finance Minister Bak Barnaba Chol, who had served only three months in office, without providing an official explanation.

Political analysts say such frequent reshuffles of senior government and military officials have become a hallmark of Kiir’s leadership style, often interpreted as efforts to consolidate power amid ongoing instability and uncertainty surrounding political succession in the country.

South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, has continued to face political volatility despite a fragile peace agreement intended to end years of civil conflict. The latest dismissals are likely to fuel further debate over governance, accountability, and political stability as the country navigates ongoing internal challenges.

The situation remains closely watched, with observers warning that continued leadership upheavals could impact the country’s already delicate political balance.
