The Enugu State Government has issued an urgent public health alert following a confirmed outbreak of rabies in a community within the state, prompting immediate directives for widespread dog vaccination and heightened public safety measures.

According to official statements released on March 31, 2026, the outbreak was recorded in the Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, with authorities warning that the viral disease poses a severe threat to both animals and humans due to its extremely high fatality rate once symptoms appear.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Patrick Ubru, described rabies as a deadly viral infection transmitted primarily through the bites or saliva of infected animals, particularly dogs. He stressed that once clinical symptoms manifest, the disease is almost always fatal, underscoring the urgency of preventive action.

In response to the outbreak, the state government has ordered all dog owners and pet keepers to immediately vaccinate their animals against rabies. Residents have also been directed to confine their pets and prevent them from roaming freely in public spaces, a move aimed at reducing the risk of transmission.

Authorities further warned members of the public to avoid contact with stray or unfamiliar animals, particularly within affected communities. Veterinary services across the state have been placed on high alert, with instructions to promptly report any animals exhibiting symptoms such as aggression, excessive salivation, abnormal behaviour, or paralysis.

Health officials also issued clear emergency guidelines for residents who may come into contact with potentially infected animals. Individuals bitten or scratched are advised to immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap under running water for at least 10 minutes and seek urgent medical attention at the nearest healthcare facility.

The government emphasized the critical role of community awareness in containing the outbreak, calling on local leaders to sensitise residents on the dangers of rabies and the importance of preventive measures. Officials assured that the state’s Veterinary Services Department is actively collaborating with relevant agencies to contain the spread and protect public health.

Rabies remains a major public health concern globally, particularly in developing regions, where it continues to claim thousands of lives annually. Experts note that the disease disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, especially children, who are more likely to suffer animal bites.

As containment efforts intensify in Enugu State, authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to safety guidelines to prevent further infections and potential loss of life.
