Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested an 18-year-old suspect for allegedly vandalising critical road safety installations on the Third Mainland Bridge, one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors.
The suspect, identified as Dogara John, was apprehended by officers of the Rapid Response Squad while reportedly removing reflective road studs installed along the bridge to enhance visibility and guide motorists, particularly at night and during poor weather conditions.
According to police authorities, a search conducted at the scene led to the recovery of approximately 20 of the vandalised road studs in the suspect’s possession. Officials emphasized that these installations are essential to road safety, helping drivers maintain proper lane positioning and reducing the risk of accidents on the heavily trafficked route.
The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to clamp down on the destruction of public infrastructure across Lagos State. Police reiterated that acts of vandalism not only damage government property but also pose significant risks to the lives of road users.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, reaffirmed the command’s zero-tolerance stance on vandalism, warning that individuals involved in such activities will face the full weight of the law. He also called on residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements around public facilities to authorities.
Authorities confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the suspect is expected to be charged in court upon completion of the process.
