Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has declared that the country will continue to defend its nuclear and missile programmes, describing them as critical to national security despite increasing pressure from the United States.
In a statement broadcast on state television on April 30, 2026, Khamenei emphasized that Iran’s technological and military capabilities remain essential to the country’s sovereignty and long-term development. He noted that many Iranians view these programmes as symbols of national strength that must be protected.
The remarks come amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, particularly as Washington continues to push for new negotiations aimed at limiting Tehran’s nuclear activities.
Khamenei also referenced growing geopolitical strain in the region, including the impact of U.S. measures targeting Iran’s economy and oil exports. At the same time, Iran maintains strategic influence over the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.
The ongoing standoff has already contributed to volatility in global energy markets, with analysts warning that further escalation could have serious economic consequences worldwide.
In his address, Khamenei criticized the presence of foreign powers in the Gulf region, arguing that regional issues should be handled by countries within the Middle East rather than external actors.
The latest developments highlight the fragile state of diplomacy between Iran and the United States, with both sides maintaining firm positions on key issues. While diplomatic efforts continue, prospects for a breakthrough remain uncertain.
