Hungary Votes in Crucial Election That Could End Viktor Orbán’s 16-Year Rule

Voters across Hungary have gone to the polls in a landmark parliamentary election that could bring an end to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s 16-year hold on power, in a vote being closely monitored by the European Union, Russia, and the United States.

The election is widely seen as one of the most consequential in Hungary’s modern history, with Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party facing a strong challenge from the opposition Tisza Party led by Peter Magyar. Recent opinion polls suggest the opposition could hold a lead, reflecting growing dissatisfaction among voters.

Orbán, who has governed since 2010, has built a political system he describes as an “illiberal democracy,” emphasizing national sovereignty and traditional values. However, critics within Europe have accused his administration of undermining democratic institutions, media freedom, and minority rights.

The campaign has been shaped by economic concerns, with many Hungarians expressing frustration over rising living costs and what they describe as years of stagnation. Allegations that individuals close to the government have accumulated significant wealth have also fueled public discontent.

The election carries broader international implications. A potential defeat for Orbán could alter Hungary’s position within the European Union and weaken one of Russia’s closest allies in the bloc. It may also influence Western political movements that have drawn inspiration from Orbán’s leadership style.

During the campaign, Orbán framed the vote as a choice between “war and peace,” warning that opposition leadership could draw Hungary deeper into regional conflicts, particularly the war in Ukraine. His challenger, however, has rejected such claims, focusing instead on governance reforms and economic recovery.

Voting began early Sunday and is expected to determine the composition of Hungary’s 199-seat parliament. Analysts say the outcome remains uncertain, with a significant number of undecided voters and recent electoral boundary changes adding complexity to predictions.

As ballots are cast, the result is expected to have far-reaching consequences not only for Hungary’s political future but also for the balance of power within Europe and its relationship with global powers.
