A violent gunbattle broke out outside the building housing the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, Türkiye, leaving one attacker dead and two others injured after an intense exchange of gunfire with police.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in the heart of Istanbul’s main financial district, where security forces engaged multiple armed assailants in a firefight that lasted for at least 10 minutes, according to witnesses and authorities.

Eyewitness footage showed police officers taking cover and returning fire as shots rang out near a permanent security checkpoint close to the consulate building. One of the attackers, reportedly armed with both an automatic rifle and a handgun, was seen moving among parked police and security vehicles while firing.

Authorities confirmed that one of the attackers was killed during the confrontation, while the other two sustained injuries. Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said the three suspects had links to an organization that “exploits religion,” adding that two of the attackers were brothers.

The violence also left two police officers with minor injuries, according to Istanbul Governor Davut Gul, who spoke at the scene. Emergency response teams quickly secured the area as investigations began into the motives behind the attack.

Officials noted that no Israeli diplomatic staff were present at the consulate at the time of the incident. Diplomatic activity at the site has been significantly reduced since the outbreak of the Hamas-Israel war in 2023, which strained relations between Türkiye and Israel.

The attack took place near a major roadway surrounded by corporate offices and banking headquarters, where thousands of workers were present at the time. The sound of gunfire caused panic among nearby residents and workers, many of whom sought immediate shelter.

Türkiye has maintained a strong security presence around Israeli-linked sites since diplomatic tensions escalated, reflecting broader regional instability linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

The incident underscores the heightened security risks surrounding diplomatic missions in the region, as geopolitical tensions continue to spill over into urban centers far from active conflict zones.
