At least four Nigerian police officers have been confirmed dead following a deadly terrorist attack on a divisional police headquarters in Borno State, highlighting the persistent security challenges in the country’s northeast region.

The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of the day when heavily armed insurgents stormed the Nganzai divisional police headquarters, attempting to overrun the facility. According to security sources, the attackers engaged officers in a fierce gun battle that lasted for hours.

Police authorities confirmed that the assailants used advanced weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades, causing significant damage to the station and surrounding infrastructure. Despite resistance from police personnel and other security operatives, four officers were killed in the line of duty during the confrontation.

The deceased officers have been identified as members of specialized police units, including the Police Mobile Force and crack squad, who were deployed to defend the station against the insurgents. Security forces were eventually able to repel the attackers, preventing them from taking control of the facility.

In a related development, the attackers also struck nearby communities, including a location housing internally displaced persons (IDPs), where additional casualties were reported and several homes destroyed.

Borno State, long considered the epicenter of the Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgency, has continued to experience recurring attacks targeting both civilians and security personnel. The region has remained volatile despite ongoing military operations aimed at curbing extremist activities.

Authorities say additional security reinforcements have been deployed to the affected areas to prevent further attacks and restore calm. Meanwhile, police leadership has paid tribute to the fallen officers, describing them as courageous personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation.

The latest incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by insurgent groups in northeastern Nigeria, as calls grow louder for stronger security measures and enhanced support for frontline personnel battling terrorism.
