A tragic incident has occurred in Oyo State after a wild elephant invaded a local community, killing one resident and leaving another person missing, according to authorities.
The घटना happened in Innayin Community on Thursday afternoon when residents reported the sudden appearance of the animal around 3:30 p.m. The unexpected intrusion caused panic, as people fled for safety while the elephant moved through the area.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that a 45-year-old man, identified as Ibrahim Tijani, was found dead in a nearby bush with injuries consistent with an animal attack. His body has since been taken to a hospital for examination.
Authorities also reported that another resident, a 50-year-old man identified as Muhammadu Bingin, is currently missing after encountering the same elephant. Search operations are ongoing as security personnel and local groups work to locate him.
Police officers, in collaboration with local vigilantes and hunters, were quickly deployed to the community after receiving a distress call. Officials say efforts are underway to control the situation and prevent further casualties.
Residents of Innayin and surrounding communities have been advised to remain calm but stay away from the affected area. Authorities also urged the public to report any sighting of the animal immediately.
The police noted that wildlife management authorities, including the National Park Service, have been contacted to provide expert guidance on safely handling the situation.
The incident has raised concerns about human-wildlife conflict, especially in areas located near forest reserves where animals may stray into residential communities. Experts say such encounters can be dangerous and often require coordinated response efforts.
As the search for the missing resident continues, the tragedy highlights the need for improved monitoring of wildlife and stronger safety measures to protect communities living near natural habitats.
