China has called for the complete eradication of scam centers operating in Cambodia, as concerns grow over the scale of cross-border fraud activities and human trafficking linked to the industry.
Speaking during a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Phnom Penh, China’s top diplomat Wang Yi emphasized the urgent need to dismantle the criminal networks behind online scams.
According to China’s foreign ministry, Wang Yi described cross-border gambling and fraud as serious threats that endanger people’s lives and property, insisting that such operations must be “resolutely cracked down on and completely eradicated.
Cambodia has been identified as a major hub for scam centers, where tens of thousands of individuals are believed to be involved in online fraud schemes. Reports indicate that while some participants operate willingly, many others are trafficked into the system and forced to carry out scams under coercive conditions.
The fraudulent operations, often run from large compounds, form part of a multibillion-dollar illicit industry targeting victims across the world. Governments and international organizations have raised alarm over the rapid expansion of these activities and their links to organized crime networks.
Under increasing international pressure, Cambodian authorities have pledged to intensify efforts to shut down these centers. Prime Minister Hun Manet previously acknowledged the damage caused by the operations, stating that they harm the country’s reputation and economy.
During the high-level discussions, both countries also reaffirmed their strong diplomatic and economic ties. Wang Yi highlighted the “unbreakable bond” between China and Cambodia, noting ongoing cooperation in areas such as trade, infrastructure, defense, and agriculture.
The meeting further addressed regional stability issues, including relations between Cambodia and Thailand following previous border clashes. China expressed willingness to support dialogue and help facilitate peaceful engagement between the neighboring countries.
Analysts say China’s firm stance reflects growing international determination to tackle transnational cybercrime and human trafficking networks. The crackdown on scam centers is expected to remain a key focus of regional security cooperation in Southeast Asia.
As efforts intensify, the success of these initiatives will likely depend on sustained collaboration between governments, law enforcement agencies, and international partners to dismantle criminal networks and protect vulnerable individuals.
