A Canadian man has been detained by U.S. immigration authorities and held in a controversial Florida detention facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz” over an outstanding tax debt of approximately $12,000, a case that is drawing growing concern over immigration enforcement practices in the United States.
The man, identified as Douglas Dixon, had reportedly lived in the United States for more than two decades, building a life and working to repay a tax-related offence. According to reports, Dixon had already repaid a significant portion of the debt but still owed about $12,000 at the time of his arrest earlier this year.
He was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a routine check-in and later transferred to the Florida-based detention centre nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” a facility that has faced criticism over its conditions and treatment of detainees.
Dixon is believed to be one of at least two Canadians who have been held at the facility, where detainees have reportedly described harsh conditions. Some accounts allege that individuals are treated inhumanely, with comparisons drawn to extreme historical detention environments, further intensifying public scrutiny.
The case stems from a prior tax evasion issue, to which Dixon had pleaded no contest and agreed to repay through a structured plan. Despite ongoing payments, U.S. immigration authorities proceeded with enforcement actions, ultimately detaining him and initiating deportation proceedings.
The situation has sparked debate about the proportionality of immigration enforcement in cases involving non-violent financial offences, particularly when individuals have longstanding ties to the United States and are actively working toward compliance.
Officials have not publicly confirmed a timeline for Dixon’s deportation, but reports indicate he could face removal from the U.S. and a possible lifetime ban from re-entry. The case continues to generate concern among observers, with calls for greater transparency and oversight in immigration detention practices.
