Canada’s ambassador to the United States, Mark Wiseman, has emphasized that the relationship between Canada and the U.S. remains too critical to be abandoned, even as tensions rise ahead of a major review of the North American trade agreement.

Speaking before a parliamentary committee, Wiseman highlighted the importance of maintaining strong economic and diplomatic ties between the two countries, particularly as discussions surrounding the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement intensify.

Wiseman, who assumed the role earlier in 2026, acknowledged that he does not come from a traditional diplomatic background but believes his experience in business and negotiations will be valuable in navigating complex trade discussions.

During the session, he addressed key issues expected to dominate upcoming negotiations, including long-standing disputes over Canada’s supply management system in sectors such as dairy. The ambassador made it clear that he does not agree with U.S. criticism of Canada’s approach, signaling that Ottawa is unlikely to concede easily on the matter.

The remarks come as Canada prepares for a scheduled review of the trilateral trade agreement with the United States and Mexico. The agreement, which replaced NAFTA, governs a large share of North American trade and is considered essential to economic stability across the region.

Despite ongoing disagreements, Wiseman stressed that the Canada–U.S. relationship remains deeply interconnected, with trade, investment, and supply chains linking both economies in ways that make disengagement impractical.

His comments align with broader efforts by the Canadian government to manage tensions while protecting national interests. Prime Minister Mark Carney has already established a new advisory committee to help guide negotiations and prepare for the upcoming review.

Analysts say the stakes are high, as the United States remains Canada’s largest trading partner, accounting for the majority of Canadian exports. Any disruption to the agreement could have significant economic consequences for industries on both sides of the border.

The ambassador also underscored the importance of balancing cooperation with sovereignty, noting that while Canada seeks shared economic prosperity, it must not come at the expense of its own policy independence.

As negotiations approach, both countries face the challenge of resolving key disputes while preserving one of the world’s most important bilateral economic relationships. The outcome of the review will likely shape North American trade dynamics for years to come.
