Atiku Slams Vice President Shettima, Says He “Lacks Manners” Amid Political Tensions

Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sharply criticized current Vice President Kashim Shettima, describing him as lacking manners and respect following a public challenge over his political record.

The dispute began after Shettima reportedly challenged Atiku to list specific achievements from his time in office, including projects executed in Northern Nigeria and individuals he empowered during his tenure. The remarks triggered a strong reaction from Atiku, who declined to engage with the vice president on the issue.

In his response, Atiku stated that he would not answer Shettima’s questions, arguing that the vice president’s approach was disrespectful. He emphasized that, given his age and experience, he should not be addressed in such a manner.

The former vice president further framed his position within cultural expectations in Northern Nigeria, noting that younger individuals are traditionally expected to show respect to elders, particularly in public discourse.

The exchange highlights rising political tensions ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections, as key political figures increasingly engage in public confrontations over performance, leadership, and legacy. Analysts say such rhetoric reflects a broader contest for influence and credibility among Nigeria’s political elite.

The disagreement also underscores deepening divisions between members of the ruling administration and opposition figures, with debates over governance, achievements, and accountability becoming central themes in the evolving political landscape.

As political activity intensifies, the clash between Atiku and Shettima signals the start of what could be a heated pre-election period, with both sides positioning themselves strongly in the national conversation.
