Fresh allegations have emerged against Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, with claims that he allocated prime Abuja land and handed out $50,000 each to more than 29 senior officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to a report published on April 3, 2026, sources within INEC alleged that multiple top officials of the electoral body received land allocations in high-value areas of Abuja alongside significant financial inducements. The claims have raised serious concerns about the independence and credibility of the commission responsible for overseeing Nigeria’s elections.
Insiders reportedly indicated that those who benefited include senior figures such as national commissioners, directors, and other high-ranking officials within INEC. The alleged allocations are said to involve plots of land valued at hundreds of millions of naira, making them among the most lucrative assets in the Federal Capital Territory.
The report further claims that some beneficiaries may have received additional financial support or waivers to secure ownership of the allocated lands, suggesting a broader system of inducement. Sources said the situation raises questions about whether such benefits could influence decisions within the electoral body, especially ahead of future elections.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official response from Wike or his media aides regarding the allegations. Similarly, the leadership of INEC has not issued a formal statement addressing the claims.
The development comes at a politically sensitive time in Nigeria, as preparations and alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to intensify. Analysts warn that allegations of this nature could erode public trust in democratic institutions if not thoroughly investigated.
INEC, as Nigeria’s electoral umpire, plays a critical role in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections. Any perception of compromise within the commission is likely to generate widespread concern among political stakeholders and the general public.
Calls are already mounting for an independent investigation into the allegations, with civil society groups expected to demand transparency and accountability from both the Federal Capital Territory Administration and the electoral commission.
As the story continues to unfold, attention remains focused on whether authorities will initiate a probe and clarify the circumstances surrounding the alleged land allocations and financial inducements.
