A sweeping police operation targeting a surge in residential break-ins across the Greater Toronto Area has resulted in the arrest of 33 suspects, who now face a combined total of 337 criminal charges, authorities have confirmed.
The arrests follow a months-long investigation known as “Project Fortis,” conducted by York Regional Police, which focused on a wave of more than 125 break-and-enter incidents across York Region and surrounding areas.
Police say the investigation ran from November 2025 to March 2026 and targeted organized groups believed to be responsible for repeated residential burglaries. The suspects were taken into custody following coordinated enforcement actions, marking one of the largest crackdowns on property crime in the region in recent years.
Authorities also revealed that more than $2 million worth of stolen property was recovered during the operation, including jewelry, cash, and other high-value items. Some of the recovered goods have already been returned to victims, while hundreds of items remain unclaimed as police work to identify their rightful owners.
Investigators have urged residents who experienced break-ins during the period to review police-released images of recovered property and come forward if they recognize any belongings. Officials emphasized that a verification process will be required before items can be returned.
While police have not yet released detailed information about all suspects involved, the scale of the charges reflects the seriousness and organized nature of the criminal activity. The case includes multiple counts of break-and-enter, possession of stolen property, and related offences tied to the broader investigation.
The operation highlights growing concerns over organized property crime in the GTA, where coordinated burglary rings have increasingly targeted residential neighborhoods. Law enforcement agencies say they are continuing efforts to dismantle such networks and prevent further incidents.
