A tragic aviation disaster has claimed the lives of at least 13 passengers following a fatal plane crash in South Sudan, with preliminary findings pointing to adverse weather conditions as a likely cause.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 27, 2026, when a small passenger aircraft operating a domestic flight reportedly went down near the capital, Juba. According to aviation authorities, the plane identified as a Cessna 208 Caravan—was en route from Yei to Juba International Airport when it lost contact with air traffic control mid-flight.

Officials confirmed that all those on board perished in the crash, including the pilot, bringing the total number of fatalities to 14. The victims were said to include mostly South Sudanese nationals, alongside two Kenyan citizens.

Initial investigations suggest that poor weather conditions, particularly low visibility, may have played a critical role in the accident. Authorities noted that the aircraft likely encountered difficult flying conditions shortly before communication was lost, raising concerns about the safety challenges faced by small aircraft operating in the region.

Emergency response teams were swiftly dispatched to the crash site, located approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Juba. Visual evidence from the scene showed the wreckage engulfed in flames, scattered across a hilly and mist-covered area.

The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority has since launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. While weather is currently suspected as the primary factor, officials say a comprehensive probe will determine whether other elements such as mechanical failure or human error—may have contributed.

This latest incident adds to a troubling pattern of aviation accidents in South Sudan, a country where air transport remains vital due to limited road infrastructure but is often hampered by safety concerns. Experts have long cited issues such as aging aircraft, regulatory gaps, and unpredictable weather conditions as persistent risks in the sector.

Authorities have expressed condolences to the families of the victims as recovery and identification efforts continue.
