The resolution was approved on Wednesday with 13 members voting in favor, while Russia and China abstained from the vote. The measure condemns Iran’s attacks on several countries in the Gulf region and calls for an immediate end to all strikes and provocations.
The Security Council said the attacks represent a breach of international law and a serious threat to international peace and security, emphasizing the need for Iran to stop targeting neighboring countries.
The resolution also condemned threats to international shipping routes, particularly attempts to interfere with navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.
The measure was introduced by Bahrain on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and received backing from 135 countries, reflecting growing international concern about the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Bahrain’s ambassador to the United Nations, Jamal Alrowaiei, said the strong support for the resolution demonstrates global alarm over the attacks on Gulf states and their impact on regional stability and energy security.
Western diplomats also warned that the conflict could further destabilize the region if hostilities continue. France’s UN representative said the war has already plunged the Middle East into a dangerous crisis and called for an immediate halt to the violence.
Meanwhile, Russia and China said they abstained because they believed the resolution did not fully address the broader causes of the conflict, including the role of military actions by other countries involved in the crisis.
Diplomats at the United Nations warned that continued attacks in the region could threaten global energy supplies, international trade routes, and civilian infrastructure across several countries.
The resolution comes as the conflict involving Iran, the United States, Israel, and regional states continues to escalate, raising fears of a wider war across the Middle East.
