Authorities in Nigeria have launched an investigation into the mysterious death of a teenage boy whose body was discovered at a swimming pool within the University of Ibadan, raising concerns over safety and possible foul play.
According to reports, the victim, believed to be between 14 and 15 years old, was found floating in the university’s swimming pool under unclear circumstances.
Officials from the Oyo State Police Command confirmed that the incident occurred on March 26, after the institution’s Chief Security Officer alerted authorities to the discovery. The body was subsequently retrieved from the pool and transported to the General Hospital in Adeoyo, where the teenager was confirmed dead and deposited at the mortuary.
Preliminary findings from investigators revealed troubling signs, including blood reportedly coming from the victim’s mouth and nose, along with visible bruises on the nose. Authorities also discovered personal belongings believed to belong to the deceased—such as a pair of shoes and clothing—near the pool area, as well as bloodstains within the surrounding pavilion.
Police spokesperson Ayanlade Olayinka stated that the case is being treated as a suspected murder, with detectives carrying out a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
Further clarification from the University of Ibadan Students’ Union indicated that the victim was not a student of the institution, a detail that has added another layer of complexity to the case.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue. Security agencies are working to identify the victim and uncover how the incident occurred, with growing calls for improved safety measures around public facilities.
