Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has signed a new strategic partnership agreement with Japan aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries in areas including defence, energy security, technology, and economic development.
The agreement was signed in Tokyo during a meeting between Carney and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, marking a significant step in deepening Canada-Japan relations amid rising geopolitical tensions and global economic uncertainty.
Under the new partnership, both nations agreed to increase collaboration on defence cooperation, clean energy, cybersecurity, and economic security, while also expanding trade and investment opportunities between Canadian and Japanese companies.
Officials from both countries said the partnership will also involve launching new bilateral dialogues on economic security and cyber policy, as well as exploring closer cooperation between their defence industries.
Carney emphasized that Canada and Japan share common values and strategic interests, particularly in maintaining stability and secure supply chains in the Indo-Pacific region. He noted that the agreement would help strengthen cooperation in critical sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals, and clean energy technologies.
The new partnership also includes plans to modernize existing economic cooperation frameworks and encourage investment opportunities between the two countries. Canadian and Japanese officials are expected to identify new business opportunities, particularly in emerging technologies and sustainable energy sectors.
The deal comes at a time when Canada is actively seeking to diversify its global trade partnerships and reduce economic dependence on the United States by strengthening ties with major economies across Asia.
Analysts say the partnership reflects a broader effort by Canada to deepen its engagement in the Indo-Pacific region while strengthening alliances with democratic partners facing growing geopolitical challenges.
Both leaders expressed optimism that the agreement would open new opportunities for economic growth, technological innovation, and stronger security cooperation between Canada and Japan in the years ahead.
