Former Sokoto State governor and current senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing persistent internal crises within the opposition party.
Tambuwal announced his resignation in a letter dated March 11, 2026, addressed to the PDP ward chairman of Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State. In the letter, the former governor said his decision followed consultations with political associates and supporters.
“After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my political associates and supporters, I have decided to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect,” Tambuwal stated.
The senator said the persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the PDP made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the party. According to him, the developments had weakened the unity and direction that once defined the opposition party.
Despite leaving the party, Tambuwal expressed appreciation to the PDP for the opportunities it provided him throughout his political career, including his time as Speaker of the House of Representatives and two-term Governor of Sokoto State.
He confirmed that he has now joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) along with his associates and supporters, describing the move as part of efforts to strengthen democratic values and offer Nigerians a credible political alternative.
Tambuwal added that he believes the ADC platform provides a stronger foundation built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and commitment to national development.
The development comes amid growing political realignments in Nigeria ahead of the next electoral cycle, with several opposition figures exploring alternative platforms outside the PDP.
Tambuwal remains one of the most influential political figures in Sokoto State, and his defection is expected to significantly affect the political landscape in the state and within the broader opposition movement.
