The suspect, a former two-term councillor who represented the Orimedu community in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, was reportedly apprehended at his residence in Ilado following intelligence linking him to illegal drug activities. Authorities said the arrest took place on March 2, 2026, after NDLEA officers carried out a search operation at the property.
During the raid, operatives allegedly discovered about 40 kilograms of skunk, a strong strain of cannabis, hidden inside one of the rooms in the building. Investigators said Olalekan admitted ownership of both the seized drugs and the property where they were found during preliminary questioning.
Officials of the anti-drug agency described the arrest as part of ongoing nationwide efforts to clamp down on narcotics trafficking and distribution networks. According to authorities, the agency has intensified intelligence-driven operations across several states as part of its broader campaign against drug abuse and criminal syndicates involved in the illegal trade.
The arrest of the former councillor has generated concern among residents of Ibeju-Lekki, a rapidly developing coastal region of Lagos State that has witnessed significant economic expansion in recent years due to major infrastructure and industrial projects. Local observers say the case underscores the continued challenge posed by narcotics trafficking even in communities experiencing rapid growth.
NDLEA officials say investigations into the matter are ongoing and that the suspect may face prosecution under Nigeria’s anti-drug laws if sufficient evidence is established. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to pursuing individuals involved in the narcotics trade regardless of their social or political status.
The agency also disclosed that similar operations carried out across other parts of the country in recent days led to multiple arrests and seizures of illicit substances, including tramadol, methamphetamine, and other controlled drugs concealed in various forms of packaging.
Security agencies have urged members of the public to continue providing credible information that can assist in dismantling drug trafficking networks and preventing the spread of illegal substances across Nigerian communities.
