Several Nigerian soldiers have been killed and others injured after Boko Haram terrorists ambushed Nigerian troops in Sambisa Forest, Borno State, according to security sources familiar with the incident.
The ambush reportedly occurred during a military operation in the notorious Sambisa Forest, a long-standing stronghold of Boko Haram militants in northeastern Nigeria. Insurgents attacked the troops with heavy gunfire, leading to intense fighting between the soldiers and the terrorists.
Sources said the attack resulted in multiple casualties among the Nigerian troops, with several soldiers confirmed dead and others sustaining injuries during the clash. The exact number of casualties has not yet been officially confirmed by military authorities.
Sambisa Forest has remained a strategic base for Boko Haram fighters for years, serving as a location where insurgents regroup, plan attacks, and launch assaults on both military positions and nearby communities.
The ambush highlights the continuing security challenges facing Nigeria’s armed forces in the north-east region, where Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have carried out numerous attacks on military bases, patrol units, and civilian communities.
Nigeria has battled the Boko Haram insurgency since 2009, a conflict that has killed thousands of people and displaced millions across the Lake Chad Basin region.
Security analysts warn that despite repeated military offensives, insurgent groups continue to stage ambushes and surprise attacks on security forces, particularly in remote forested areas such as Sambisa.
The Nigerian military has not yet released an official statement detailing the casualties or the outcome of the operation, but investigations and security operations in the area are expected to continue.
