Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has removed Akin Fakorede as the head of the IGP Monitoring Unit at the Force Headquarters amid allegations of corruption and misconduct.

Sources within the Nigeria Police Force said the decision was part of a broader internal shake-up aimed at addressing complaints and controversies surrounding the unit’s operations.

Fakorede, a former commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), had been appointed to lead the IGP Monitoring Unit in December 2024 by the then Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Following his removal, the police leadership reportedly appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Aliyu Abubakar as the new head of the IGP Monitoring Unit. The directive confirming the change was circulated through an official communication from NIGPOL FORSEC Abuja to police formations nationwide.

The IGP Monitoring Unit is a special investigative unit within the Nigeria Police Force responsible for handling sensitive cases, monitoring police activities, and investigating misconduct involving officers.

Fakorede’s removal comes amid growing scrutiny of police operations in Nigeria and calls for stronger accountability within the force. Observers say the leadership change could signal an attempt by the new police command to restore public confidence and address allegations of corruption within key units of the force.

As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force has not issued a detailed public statement outlining the specific allegations that led to Fakorede’s removal. However, the development is seen as part of ongoing reforms and restructuring within the police hierarchy
