Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, finds itself at the centre of contentious contract negotiations as head coach Eric Chelle has submitted an extensive list of proposed terms to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that include a $130,000 monthly salary and provisions for 24-hour uninterrupted electricity at his residence, among other conditions.
The Franco-Malian tactician, who currently earns around $50,000 per month under his existing contract, reportedly wants his compensation raised to $130,000 a figure that would cover his technical staff and personal assistant as part of a 19-point proposal presented to the NFF for a contract extension.
In addition to the salary increase, Chelle’s terms call for a private SUV with chauffeur and security, a house in a secure environment with 24-hour uninterrupted power supply, a furnished office with projection and internet facilities, and flight tickets for his spouse and children.
Other demands outlined in the proposal extend beyond personal benefits to include operational and technical autonomy. These include the right to select international friendly matches based on opponents, authority over team selection and player call-ups, and opportunities to travel abroad to scout and monitor both local and foreign-based players for integration into various national teams.
The coach’s contract draft also stipulates regular monthly meetings with all national team coaches, bonuses and allowances per federation structure, and formal working contracts for his technical team.
The demands come at a time when Chelle’s stature has risen following the Super Eagles’ competitive performances, but they have also provoked discussion among football stakeholders about budgetary priorities and the federation’s ability to meet such high contractual expectations.
As negotiations continue, it remains unclear whether the NFF will accede to the proposed conditions or seek alternative leadership for the national team ahead of upcoming competitions.
