IBADAN, NIGERIA — In a startling development underscoring growing community-police collaboration in Oyo State, operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have taken into custody a 20-year-old male suspect after alleged possession of a severed human leg was uncovered in a sack he was carrying in a commercial district of Oyo town.
The suspect, identified as Garuba Aminu, was intercepted by vigilant residents of the Oroki commercial area on the morning of Friday, February 20, 2026, when his unusual behaviour and movements sparked alarm among members of the local community. Acting on suspicion, community watchdogs searched the large sack he was carrying, discovering what was described by police as a lower right human leg part concealed among discarded plastic bottles.
Word of the discovery quickly spread, attracting an angry crowd and raising tensions as residents called for immediate punitive action. Before any extrajudicial violence could occur, a joint patrol team dispatched by the state police command, supported by other security partners, arrived at the scene and dispersed the mob, securing the suspect and recovering the item as evidence for further forensic examination.
In an official statement, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo Command, confirmed Aminu’s arrest and emphasized that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department. Investigators will conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the discovery and the origin of the body part.
While commending the timely intervention of alert community members, the police issued stern warnings against mob justice, affirming that taking the law into one’s own hands undermines due process and could obstruct justice. Residents were also urged to maintain vigilance and report suspicious individuals or activity directly to law enforcement agencies.
This incident comes amid broader concerns over community insecurity in parts of Oyo State, where police-public partnerships have increasingly become central to crime detection and crime prevention. Authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety and advancing transparent criminal investigations as they unfold.
