A Nigerian man identified as Emeka Uzor was shot dead on Sunday afternoon at a Caltex filling station in Windsor East, Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa, according to the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) and multiple community sources.

Uzor, a native of Nkerefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, was reportedly seated in his vehicle at the station around 3 p.m. when the attack occurred. Details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.

In an official statement released by NUSA leaders, including President Smart Nwobi and National Publicity Secretary Akindele Olunloyo, the killing has been described as deeply disturbing and unacceptable, and the organisation has urged the South African Police Service  particularly the Minister of Police and the National Commissioner to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.

NUSA’s statement framed the incident as part of a broader pattern of violent attacks against Nigerian nationals living in South Africa, and called on authorities to apprehend and prosecute those responsible. The union also appealed to the Nigerian High Commission and Consulate-General in South Africa to engage diplomatically with local officials to protect the safety and rights of Nigerians abroad.

The South African policing authority has not yet issued a formal public statement on the investigation. Meanwhile, members of the Nigerian community in Johannesburg have expressed deep concern and grief, with some threatening protests if accountability and action are not forthcoming from both law enforcement and diplomatic channels.

Community advocates emphasised that the shooting has heightened existing anxieties among foreign nationals in South Africa, where Nigerians have previously reported episodes of violence and insecurity, prompting calls for stronger protective measures and justice mechanisms.
