ILORIN, Nigeria — A series of coordinated terrorist attacks in Woro, a community in Kwara State, has resulted in dozens of deaths, widespread destruction, and deep concern over the safety of civilians, local officials and residents confirmed on Thursday. Among the missing is the Emir of Woro, whose whereabouts remain unknown following the violence.
According to local authorities and community representatives, the attacks unfolded on Tuesday evening when heavily armed assailants believed to be linked to a criminal terror network entered multiple settlements in the Woro area. Several homes, shops and vehicles were set ablaze, prompting widespread fear and disruption of daily life.
Officials reported that a significant number of residents were killed or injured as communities were targeted, and that women and children were among those affected. The full toll of the violence has yet to be formally verified, and emergency responders are still accounting for those who may be unaccounted for or displaced.
In a statement issued late Wednesday, the Kwara State Government confirmed the security breach and said that search and rescue operations were underway for those missing, including the Emir of Woro, whom officials described as a respected traditional leader in the region. The statement emphasised that law enforcement and military units had been deployed to the area to restore order and protect residents.
“The government deeply regrets the loss of lives and destruction of property in the Woro community,” the statement said, adding that families of victims would receive support and that priority was being given to securing the area and safeguarding citizens.
Security sources with knowledge of the situation said investigators were examining whether the attackers were linked to known bandit or militant groups operating in parts of northern Nigeria, although no group has formally claimed responsibility. Federal and state security agencies are conducting joint operations to identify and apprehend suspects while providing humanitarian assistance to affected families.
Residents who fled the violence described scenes of confusion and fear as they sought safety in neighbouring towns and villages. Community leaders appealed for urgent government intervention to prevent further attacks and support recovery efforts.
The attacks in Woro come amid a broader national debate over security challenges in rural and semi-urban areas, where armed groups have exploited governance vacuums and limited police presence to conduct raids, kidnappings, and other criminal acts. Analysts say the incident highlights persistent security gaps and the need for enhanced collaboration between federal, state and community security frameworks.
In a message of condolence, the Kwara State House of Assembly condemned the violence and pledged to support legislative efforts to strengthen security policies and resource allocation for frontline responders. “We mourn the loss of lives and pray for the safe return of the Emir and all those missing,” said the assembly’s speaker.
As the search continues for the Emir of Woro and others unaccounted for, authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and to assist security efforts by reporting credible information to law enforcement channels. The state government said it will provide periodic updates as relief and security operations unfold.
