Sagamu, Nigeria — A magistrate court in Ogun State has again adjourned the trial of the driver accused of causing a devastating car accident that injured British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua and claimed the lives of two of his close associates. The matter has been postponed to March 13, 2026, as prosecutors seek additional time to prepare their case.
The defendant, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, appeared before Ogun Magistrate Court 1 in Sagamu on Wednesday, where the case was adjourned after the prosecution requested more time to gather evidence and organise witness testimony. The next hearing has now been scheduled for mid-March.
The charges stem from a fatal collision that occurred on December 29, 2025, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and members of his coaching team collided with a stationary truck. Joshua, a two-time unified heavyweight world champion, survived the crash and was treated for injuries, while two of his team members — Latif “Latz” Ayodele (personal trainer) and Sina Ghami (strength and conditioning coach) — lost their lives at the scene.
In January, local police charged Kayode with multiple offences related to the crash, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s licence.
During Wednesday’s brief proceedings, prosecutors informed the court that further time was needed to fully prepare their case, including the collection of additional evidence and the securing of key witnesses. The magistrate granted the request, resulting in the new court date set for March 13, 2026.
Kayode has not yet entered a plea to the latest charges now before the court. In earlier hearings, he was granted bail after meeting required bail conditions.
The crash, which took place in late December, drew international attention due to Joshua’s global profile and his close ties to Nigeria. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Joshua was treated in hospital before being discharged and returning to the United Kingdom, where he has continued his recovery.
In earlier court appearances, voices within Joshua’s family publicly questioned the value of prolonged legal proceedings, with some wondering whether the trial would deliver justice or closure after an accident that has already inflicted significant emotional pain. Meanwhile, local traffic authorities have indicated that preliminary investigations into the incident suggested that excessive speed and other factors may have played a role in the fatal collision.
Safety and Accountability Concerns on Nigerian Roads
The case has reinvigorated broader discussions in Nigeria about road safety, enforcement of traffic laws, and standards of driver licensing issues that authorities have long sought to address amid persistently high rates of serious crashes on major highways.
As the trial resumes in March, legal observers will be watching closely to see how the court handles the prosecution’s evidence and whether the proceedings offer a clear determination of accountability in one of the most high-profile road-traffic cases in recent Nigerian history.
