ABA, Nigeria — The Abia State Police Command has moved to quell public alarm following a bomb scare in the commercial city of Aba, clarifying that the suspicious item which triggered widespread concern was associated with a legitimate road construction project, and not an explosive device, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

Residents in parts of Aba reported seeing what they believed to be an unattended bag near a busy roadside area on Monday afternoon, prompting panic and the temporary cordoning off of several streets by local security operatives. Videos circulating on social media showed bystanders keeping their distance from the object, while some speculated that it resembled an explosive ordinance. The incident quickly drew attention and concern from commuters and neighboring communities.

The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, issued a statement dismissing fears of a terror threat, explaining that the item in question was part of equipment used by contractors engaged in a state-sponsored road rehabilitation initiative. According to Chinaka, engineers on site had mistakenly left a piece of machinery and associated cables in an unusual position, which may have been misinterpreted as a potential explosive. The police emphasized that a thorough inspection was conducted by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, which confirmed there was no danger.

“The safety of residents and motorists is our priority,” ASP Chinaka stated. “Upon receiving reports of a suspicious object, our officers promptly responded, secured the area, and engaged the EOD team to examine the item. We are relieved to confirm that the scare was unfounded and tied to construction equipment.” She further urged the public not to spread unverified information that could cause unnecessary fear or panic.

The road rehabilitation project referenced by the police is part of a broader state infrastructure agenda aimed at improving transportation links within Aba and surrounding communities. The initiative which includes resurfacing major arteries and upgrading drainage systems has garnered local support for its potential economic benefits, even as residents have expressed occasional concerns about traffic disruptions and safety at construction sites.

Local business owners in the area welcomed the police clarification but stressed the need for better communication between construction crews and communities to prevent future misunderstandings. “When we see unfamiliar equipment by the roadside without warnings, people fear the worst,” said one Aba trader. “A little signage and community notice would help ease anxiety.”

Security analysts noted that the incident underscores the importance of rapid response mechanisms and clear communication in urban environments where past episodes of unrest or militant activity can heighten fears among citizens. The Abia police’s prompt action in involving specialist units and issuing public clarification helped to prevent misinformation from spreading further across social networks.

As normal activities resume in the affected area of Aba, state authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring both infrastructural development and public safety, while encouraging residents to remain vigilant and report genuine security threats through official channels.
