In a widely circulated video that has ignited public outrage, two Nigerian Police Force officers attached to the Nise checkpoint in Anambra State were filmed allegedly demanding a ₦50,000 bribe from a motorist over a tinted glass permit, despite the driver’s documentation being in order. The footage, shared on the social media platform X by activist Somto Okonkwo (@General_Somto), captured the officers stopping the motorist, inspecting his papers, and then insisting on payment before allowing him to continue his journey.
According to the motorist in the recording, he explained to the officers that his vehicle documentation was complete and that the matter of tinted glass permit enforcement was currently before the courts and legally on hold. Nevertheless, the officers allegedly refused to listen, stating that the matter would not be resolved without payment, with one officer stating, “Yes, do you want me to release you… You must bring money.
The video has prompted a growing chorus on social media and civil society platforms calling for a full investigation into police conduct, disciplinary action against the officers involved, and renewed scrutiny of alleged extortionary practices at security checkpoints across the country. As of publication, the Anambra State Police Command has not issued an official response to the incident.
Corruption and misconduct within the security architecture remain persistent challenges in Nigeria, contributing to deteriorating public trust and daily grievances from motorists and commuters. This latest episode underscores the ongoing struggle for accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies.
